Upload a Google Maps Route to your Garmin Nuvi 770

You can map a route using Google Maps, then upload it to your 770. It's a bit involved, so follow closely. This may also work with the 660, 670, and 760.

Update your Nuvi software to at least version 2.90 if you have not already done so using the Garmin WebUpdater. This is important, and these instructions don't work on older software versions, so don't skip this step. Garmin seems to have fixed the route import with this version.
Get the GMapToGPX tool installed on your browser.
Create a route on Google Maps. One easy way to do this is to go to maps.google.com, click 'Get Directions', and enter two addresses. The GMapToGPX page has more details on this, and some examples.
Run GMapToGPX and it'll generate the contents of a GPX file based on the map. Copy that text and paste it into notepad. Save the file as 'myroute.gpx' someplace on your hard disk.
Plug your 770 into your PC via the USB cable.
Go to the filesystem of your 770. On a Windows machine, you can double-click 'My Computer' and look for a drive named 'Garmin Nuvi' (mine's the J: drive, yours will probably be different). Open it up, then go into the Garmin\GPX directory.
Copy the 'myroute.gpx' file you saved earlier into this directory.
Unplug your 770 from the USB cable and wait for it to boot up.
Go to Tools - My Data - Import Route from File
Look for the entry titled 'route0', select it, then touch 'Import'. [Note: if 'route0' doesn't show up, exit out of this screen, wait a minute or two, then come back and check again. Several times I've seen it not immediately list the new file.]
That's it! Touch 'Back' - 'Back' - 'Where To' - 'Routes' and you should see the new route in the list. You can select it and touch 'Preview' to see it on the map to verify that it's correct.

Advanced

When you paste the text into notepad, you can change the name of the route from 'route0' to something more meaningful. Look for the line that looks like this and change it before saving the file:

Example:

When copied to your 770, it'll show up in the import list and route list with that name instead of route0.
